‘Hatha Yoga’ is not a particular style of Yoga but merely the term used to describe the physical practice element of Yoga (the asanas, meaning ‘postures’). A contrast to this could be ‘Raja Yoga’, which is the practice of meditation.

This course is aimed at those completely new to Yoga as well as those who have taken time out from practice and wish to reacquaint themselves with the fundamental principles of Hatha Yoga. The classes will be heavily influenced by Yoga Therapy, a technique used to help recover from accidents, injuries and stress to the body, and are therefore suitable for people suffering from back problems and injuries.

Course elements:

  • Fundamental principles of movement
  • Introduction to the postures and the Sun Salutation (a flowing sequence, often practiced in order to warm up the body)
  • How to integrate breath with movement
  • How to use the breath as a guide in practice
  • Relaxation techniques to help you unwind and feel at ease
  • Techniques to recover from back pain and other injuries and ailments
  • How to integrate Yoga into your daily life
  • Explanation of the attitudes to practice that distinguish Hatha Yoga from other forms of physical exercise

As the course progresses we will take Hatha Yoga from being a simple set of stretches into a deeper practice that rejuvenates and refreshes the body and mind. The closing part of every class will comprise Yoga Nidra, a deep form of relaxation and self-enquiry.

As you journey into the teachings of Hatha Yoga it is important to understand one simple thing: we do not practice Hatha Yoga in order to reach any particular level of ability. It ‘s not about getting ‘there’; it is about being here.

Return to Timetable

"From the very first Yoga session, people discover the intimacy that nature has established between awareness and physiology. Getting back in touch with this intimacy is very reassuring and delightful, particularly for people who have given up on exercise and become virtual strangers to their bodies"
