Practicing the Yamas

12 Week course beginning 12th September 2008, 8-9.30pm, with Thursday Evenings, Iffley Church Hall, Church Way, Iffley Village Oxford. See timetable section for a map to the venue.

Course outline

Astanga Yoga as set out by Patanajali, the teacher of teachers and the author of texts from which all contemporary Yoga has sprung from sets out the necessity of following an eight-fold path when practicing Yoga. Patanjali states that before we can practice Asana with any propose we must learn and integrate the Yamas, essentially attitudes towards ourselves and the world.

These attitudes are Ahimsa (non-violence) Satva (honesty) Asteya (non-stealing) Bramacharya (moderation) Aparigraha (non-attachment)

The classes will focus on bringing in attitudes to our practice together, taking us to a more peaceful relationship with ourselves and ultimately with the world around us.

The Asana focus will change from lesson to lesson as we must choose the right practice to explore each of these unique attitudes.

This course is aimed at those with some Yoga experience and with a desire to learn more and go deeper. Each lesson will begin with a reading from the yoga Sutras and exploration of each individual attitude.

"From the very first Yoga session, people discover the intimacy that nature has established between awareness and physiology. Getting back in touch with this intimacy is very reassuring and delightful, particularly for people who have given up on exercise and become virtual strangers to their bodies"
